Tracy Redies says she was cornered and attacked outside parliamentary chamber, RCMP in Victoria say

British Columbia’s finance minister was assaulted on the grounds of the legislature in Victoria and police are investigating, police say.

Tracy Redies confirmed she was injured outside the building at around 1pm on Wednesday. “I was cornered,” she told reporters, declining to provide further details.

Redies also cancelled a scheduled appearance at the Canada-G8 summit in Quebec.

“Her injuries are believed to be minor,” Victoria police said in a statement. “They include swelling and bruising to her left elbow and leg.”

They added they were working with the B.C. legislature security team and were investigating a “well-intentioned individual” as well as the assault incident.

Earlier this year, an official with Alberta’s premier Alison Redford resigned after allegations of sexual harassment against her were reported by the Globe and Mail. The move came days after a provincial politician who faced charges of sexual harassment withdrew her complaint and announced her resignation from caucus.
